COIMBATORE: Lavish wedding parties in Tamil Nadu were never complete without a slice of Malgova. Even today, children often skip out of kindergarten reciting the Malgova mango rhyme. If Alphonso rules the fruit bowls in the north, Malgovas were a favourite on the dinner menu of south Indians. At least until a few decades ago.
But where are the juicy Malgovas now? As its pulp is yellowish white in colour and it tastes delectably sweet, this variety came to be known as Malgova (a mango that tastes like milk khoa). This mango variety grown in Salem district for over 1,000 years has vanished from dinner tables, hawkers' carts, supermarkets and over 1.2 lakh hectares of mango orchards in TN.
"Only premium fruit shops in Tamil Nadu still display a dozen or two malgovas on their shelves and sell them at Rs100 to Rs150 per fruit. Malgova has become a rich man's fruit. I am yet to see a Malgova grove in Tamil Nadu," grins Dr T N Balamohan, the mango expert at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
"When I quizzed the undergraduate students about mango varieti-es, surprisingly, all of them said they had never tasted Malgovas," says Dr Balamohan.
Horticulture experts say scanty rain fall and depleting soil moisture have led to a drastic drop in cultivation of rain-fed mango orchards. "Malgovas top the list of table-purpose variety of mangoes. But it is commercially not viable.
\ As Malgovas are shy bearers, sprouting only a few flowers that produce fruit, its yield is neither substantial nor profitable for farmers," said Dr R Prabhuram, secretary of Tamil Nadu Mango Growers Federation.
While a single tree of the parrot-beaked Thothapuri variety produces nearly 150 kilos of fruit, a Malgova tree produces just 40 to 50 kilos. Also, its rotund, irregular shape is not too tempting for traders. And though plump, it is not too pulpy for the export market.
"It is only a table purpose variety and cannot be sold to the pulp making units because it's not too pulpy," says V Venkatasamy, a mango grower in Paiyur in Krishnagiri district. "These days, we grow malgovas for our consumption alone and not for sale," he says.
But this mango season, when the popular Thothapuri and Alphonso crops failed, the Malgova yield was better, say farmers. "We had traders coming to our orchards and buying Malgovas for Rs 80 a kilo. We only hope the good season for the Malgova continues," says Dr Prabhuram.
